This is an excellent
source for genealogical materials. It has microfilm for the court records. I highly recommend their wonderful Genealogy
Room. When writing for information, please remember to
include a SASE.
The
Reference Department has microfilm copies of the Columbus
newspapers, beginning 1828, some papers are missing. They
also have some old city directories from the later 1800's.
The
genealogy department of the library has a list of people who
do research for a fee in this area. Please enclose a S.A.S.E
when requesting these names.
Court House:
Columbus Consolidated Government
Government Center Tower
Columbus, GA 31902
There
is a wealth of information available for this county.
However, due to the many changes in the boundaries and the
close proximity to Alabama, you may want to look in these
other areas as well. Russell and Lee counties in Alabama are
directly across the Chattahoochee River from Muscogee
County. It was very common for people to go back and forth
between the two areas.

The
records for the public cemeteries for the Columbus area are
housed at:

This is where you can write for burial information.
Columbus State University Archives
Established in 1975, the
Archives serves as a repository for records documenting the
history of Columbus State University and the greater
Columbus region. Because of this dual mission, the Archives
comprises two distinct collections; the Columbus State
University Collection, and the Chattahoochee Valley
Historical Collections.
Newspapers:
Columbus Ledger-Enquirer
Columbus Sun (no longer in existence)
An
older catalogue of available resources for Muscogee County
stated: "Columbus-Enquirer-Sun, Jan 1, 1880-June 1, 1934.
111 vol. Daily paper established in 1874, successor to
Columbus Enquirer and Daily Sun; in June 1934, paper
reverted to original name of Columbus Enquirer chron. by
date issued. No index. Pr. Aver. 600 pp. 23 x 18 x 2½. 28
vols. 1880-1908, public library strm.; 83 vols., 1908-34,
sup ct. clk bsmt. va." I have been advised that this
information may be inaccurate and the location of these
volumes is in question. It is hoped that these can be found
and this may serve as a starting point for someone to look
for them.
Columbus State University library also is a very good
source. The Reference Department of the W. C. Bradley
Library has microfilm copies of the Columbus newspapers,
beginning 1828, some papers are missing.
